Week 3: Muscles In Zero Gravity

If you want to understand what is happening to the modern human mind, it will help to look at what happens to a human body when you shoot it into space.
When astronauts leave Earth's atmosphere, they enter an environment of zero gravity. For the first few days, I imagine it feels like an absolute miracle. You can float effortlessly from one end of the station to the other. There is no heavy lifting. There is no bodily resistance. It is the ultimate, weightless freedom from the relentless, dragging pull of the physical world.
But under the surface, the biology is quietly panicking.
Human bones and muscles were forged over millions of years to operate against the constant, punishing downward force of gravity. That physical resistance is the exact signal that tells the body to maintain its structural integrity. Take the resistance away, and the body becomes ruthlessly efficient: if it doesn't need to spend massive amounts of energy maintaining dense bone and heavy muscle, it simply stops. The tissue begins to dissolve. When astronauts return to Earth after an extended stay in paradise, they often have to be carried out of the capsule. They are too weak to stand under their own weight.
We understand this biological law perfectly when it comes to our femurs and our calves. "Use it or lose it." It makes total sense to us. But for some reason, we completely forget that the exact same biological law applies to the organ inside our skulls.
There is a tiny knot of neural tissue sitting near the center of your brain called the anterior midcingulate cortex. The aMCC. Let's not get bogged down in a neuroscience lecture, but what researchers have discovered about this specific piece of hardware is profound. It might be the most important thing anyone has learned about the human mind in fifty years.
The aMCC, the literal, physical engine of human tenacity. It calculates the cost-benefit of effort.
But here is the absolute kicker. Here is the thing that should change how you look at your entire day.
The anterior midcingulate cortex does not grow when you do things you enjoy, even if those things are highly complex or intellectually difficult. It grows specifically and exclusively when you face friction. It flares up when you force yourself to do something you do not want to do, or when you stop yourself from doing something you desperately want to do.
It feeds on resistance. When you drag yourself out of bed for a freezing morning run when every fiber of your being wants to hit snooze, the aMCC gets denser. When you finally initiate that brutal, honest conversation you’ve been avoiding for three weeks, it gets thicker. Because the aMCC is highly plastic, it operates exactly like a muscle. When you routinely lean into friction, it physically grows and becomes more efficient. When you chronically take the path of least resistance, it shrinks.
For the vast majority of human history, nobody had to listen to a motivational podcast to build this muscle. Our ancestors did not need to invent "life hacks" to manufacture discipline. The daily struggle of staying alive provided all the gravity they needed. The world pushed back, every single day, without exception.
Then, we launched ourselves into zero gravity.
Now, we have to be really careful about how we look at this. It is incredibly easy to look at the modern world and get angry, to assume that this environment was intentionally designed to break us. It wasn’t. That kind of resentment is toxic, and worse, it’s just not true. Nobody sat in a smoky room and plotted to destroy human willpower. We were just trying to survive. We wanted to make life easier, safer, and more comfortable for our children. We built a modern habitat of total convenience. We made securing a meal as easy as opening a delivery app. We constructed environments where the temperature never fluctuates.
We succeeded. We solved the problem of baseline survival. But the system outgrew its original purpose. It morphed into an atmosphere so accommodating that you rarely have to push against anything real. We removed the gravity. And just like the astronaut's bones, our biological capacity for willpower is dissolving.
When this neural structure severely degrades, whether through aging or chronic disuse in a highly comfortable world, you don't just become a little lazy. The atrophy of the aMCC maps directly to a pathological lack of drive. At the extreme end of that decay, the brain loses its primary engine for calculating effort, and you can literally lose the basic will to engage with life. You lose the biological drive that allows you to do the necessary, difficult work that brings meaning to your days. And when that willpower goes offline, it doesn't leave you in a state of peaceful zen.
Your brain has another network called the Default Mode Network, or the DMN. The DMN is the system that runs when you are passively resting or letting your mind wander. It’s the static on the radio. While it’s necessary for memory and creativity, an overactive DMN is the exact place where rumination, anxiety, and depression live. It is the unguided noise of an empty mind.
When you voluntarily engage in difficult, purposeful effort, your aMCC flares up and acts like a switchboard, actively suppressing that anxious noise and shifting your brain’s resources into the present moment. But when your aMCC is atrophied because you live in zero gravity? The switchboard is broken. You are trapped in the noise.
We look around at our collective inability to focus, our chronic burnout, and the quiet, pervasive feeling that we just don't have the energy to change our circumstances, and we treat it like a personal failure. You are not experiencing a moral failing. You are an organism reacting normally to a world that refuses to push back.
But here is the incredible hope hidden inside this biology.
If willpower is a physical muscle, you are not helpless. You do not have to feel hopeless, and you do not have to wait for the world to change to save your own mind. You have the power to rebuild your aMCC right now, on an individual level. You have to manufacture your own gravity.
You have to start overriding your immediate wants. You have to start voluntarily choosing the hard thing over the comfortable thing. It starts with the smallest daily choices: taking the cold shower, turning off the screen, doing the grueling work that you know will be better for you and the people around you in the long run. Starting that practice of just doing it, regardless of how you feel, is how you manually reintroduce resistance into your life. Every time you push through that friction, your aMCC suppresses the anxious noise of your mind, and you physically rebuild your own willpower.
You are taking your mind back, because if you don't intentionally rebuild it, that hollowed-out muscle leaves a massive, echoing void inside of you.
